Dandelion Energy’s Wins and Learnings in the Quest to Lower the Cost of Residential Geothermal Drilling
Presented by Kathy Hannun, Dandelion Energy
Description: Founded in 2017, Dandelion’s mission is to make geothermal an affordable, mainstream HVAC option for homeowners. Affordable, residential-friendly drilling is key to this effort. Dandelion’s efforts to find cost effective, residential-friendly drilling were aided tremendously by a visit to Sweden in the summer of 2021. The Swedes are installing geothermal loops for homes for about $3,000 all in, it’s incredible. While there are important differences between the US and Sweden, there was still much our US geo industry could learn from the much more mature industry in Sweden. In this talk, Kathy will talk about some of those learnings and how Dandelion has worked to translate the Swedish method to their operations in the Northeast US, including how it’s going so far and what’s on the horizon.
Kathy Hannun is the Co-founder & President of Dandelion Energy, a NY-based startup on a mission to bring home geothermal heating and cooling into the mainstream. Kathy started Dandelion while working at Google’s X lab, where she was tasked with finding climate tech Moonshots for X to invest in. Since its founding, Dandelion has installed geothermal in thousands of homes throughout the Northeast. Kathy has been named a US DOE C3E Fellow, one of MIT Tech Review’s 35 under 35, as a TED Fellow, and one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business. She holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and Computer Science from Stanford University.
